Q&A with Basketball Divorce Court

Way back in October 2019, Sarah got coffee with Iowa City/Minneapolis post-punk emo band Basketball Divorce Court and did a quick Q&A.

How was Gabe’s Thursday night?

We were just talking about that. It was a good lineup. Good local lineup, all of our friends coming together and hanging out. The crowd was really engaged. We’ve had crowds where they just stand back like ‘no, thank you.’

What’s your favorite show you’ve ever played?

Gig-a-ween. That was in Minneapolis. It was in a garage and we were trying to keep warm. Or the Gabe’s show we did was a good topper, besides Gig-a-ween. We did the Underground Sound. That was a good show. Very cathartic. We had a fill-in drummer that learned the songs that day. He did good. That was at Connor’s place. Everybody got really rowdy, like throwing people. We also love whenever we play at Yacht Club. It’s a stage but it’s low enough to the ground. It’s also got good sound. The only thing about Gabe’s is that it’s kind of a high-up stage, which makes it hard to interact with the crowd.

Have you ever seen a ghost?

That’s not our business. If supernatural forces exist, it’s not our business. [Laughter] Katy lived in an apartment that was haunted, though.

Describe your genre in three words.

Post-punk emo. A lot of people have described us as a lot of different genres. Someone called us shock-rock once. One podcast said “this band is post-everything.”

What is everyone’s favorite color?

Black- no orange. For the entire band. But pastel pink kind of goes off.

Favorite albums?

The Dream is Over by PUP. Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet. Illmatic by Nas. Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest. The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel [Laughter]. Bridge Over Troubled Water is actually a good album, so that. Down Colorful Hill, Red House Painters. Anything by Frank Ocean. Blue Slide Park by Mac Miller. Exmilitary by Death Grips.

Which member would be most likely to survive on the deserted island?

Katy wouldn’t be able to reach the coconuts, and would wither away. Adam is a vegan, he’d be first to go. Jess watches a lot of Survivor, they could do it.

Shoutout some local bands.

Anthony Worden and his band. Jayce Nguyen, she’s solo and very talented. Cowpoke. Purple Frank. Rosemask. Penny Peach Jr. In the Attic. Everybody we’ve ever played a show with.

What do you have planned for the future?

We want to get out of Iowa, play some weekenders. Maybe record an LP and EP number two. Keep recording music. Write more songs, but you kind of have to do that to record. Relocate to Minneapolis.
