Irish folk/alternative singer Tony Benn answered some questions for us! Benn’s sound is most characterized by his rugged baritone.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?
This is a tough question, and I’m sure I’ll change my mind more than a few times, but this second my favorite memory, I’d say, is the first time I played The Engine Room in Tallahassee, Florida (which is no longer open unfortunately). I pulled in after driving all day, had no idea what it was like, no expectations at all except that no one would know who I was, only to be greeted by a full welcoming committee of people who already had my CD who came early to buy a second copy for their friends. That stuff never happens! So I was the headliner that night, got on stage, and everyone knew the words of every song. I did two encores; it was pure magic!
WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?
I would love to write a song with Patti Griffiths or Damien Jurado I think they are both incredible and our voices would harmonize really well together, or we could do a triple collaboration like Sting, Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams. That would be so cool.
WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
The one I’m most proud of at the moment (it changes) is “If I Cross Your Mind.” I think it is the song of mine that sounds the least like anything else, but the most like myself live, it’s thoughtful (at least I think it is). It’s odd and vaguely traditional. I wrote it on a summer day in my kitchen (I write nearly exclusively in kitchens), and I was just feeling great. I was happy with my life, thinking about the past fondly, but with no desire to go back to it .
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?
I’m a big reader and I think there is great inspiration to be found in books, magazines and even comics, so I’d say reading and the people around me .
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Great question! I feel very strongly about this! Large Americano and the fanciest doughnut available .
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Enjoy everything in the moment.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?
Years ago my brother got me into writing a list at the start of the year with your goals for the year on for every year you’re alive. So 20 if you’re 20, 40 if you’re 40 that kind of thing. Usually, I’m not the best at it, but this year I’m flying through it, and my list has everything from ambitious baking and devising the perfect set list, to tour plans, but my main goal is to be as content and successful as I can be with the world in the state it’s in.
