Q&A with InRegalia

Alternative rock band InRegalia did a quick Q&A with us! Based out of Mumbai, this five-piece plays mostly rock and alternative music with elements of Indian classical, and are very active on the indie circuit across India. They plan to release an EP later this year. Interview done with Peter Abraham (vocals), Vijay Fernandes (guitar), Keith Pereira (keyboard), Saurav Das (bass), and Warren Swaries (drums).

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?

Warren: Well, the first thing i realized that everyone was very down to earth and welcoming when I first auditioned with the band.  Once we started jamming and I started learning the songs I felt more and more comfortable as one thing was for sure that all of us shared the same taste in music having come up in pretty much the same era. Our musical heroes were the same favourite songs and bands too!!! I was also very impressed with the vision that Vijay had for the band and how he pretty much had a strong plan of how the band will progress maybe 3-5 years down the line. That was something I had never come across with other bands I had played with in the past.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?

Saurav: People having a good time and forgetting their troubles, that’s all that matters really. No matter what genre or what song it is, It’s the happy faces and the energy I get from seeing them that I miss the most.

WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?

Vijay: Alter Bridge never ceases to amaze me.  The vocals, melodies, guitar work and everything about that band is something that hooks me.  If I had the chance to collaborate, it would have to be these guys.  Top notch stuff by them!

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?

Pete: One of our more rocking tracks is called Lalitha which is a shout out to the trans community. In our country, they are frequently marginalised and so we wanted to make an empowering song, sort of a ‘F*ck you’ track to the discriminating world we live in. I always feel charged up while singing this song and there is a lot of pride in all of us for this one.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?

Saurav: I’m a sucker for all things 7-11, especially their hot dogs and some of the microwave Loaded Baos.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Vijay: Quite an interesting question.  In the Film World I tend to get drawn in by the characters and not the heroes who save the world.  While most of the movie magazines or websites might cover more about a Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Bradley Cooper or a Hugh Jackman, I’m quite impressed and influenced by Gary Oldman.  He’s such a versatile actor.  I’ve been following him for a long time.  Another one that comes to mind is Tobey McGuire.  He’s a highly under-rated and most associate him with Spiderman but I’ve seen some really good non hero stuff from him which from an art and acting point of view shows his versatility.  In the same vein, amongst the female actors, I admire the work of Jennifer Lawrence and Cate Blanchett.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Pete: Never let go of music and let it be in your life in whatever small or big capacity. There was a time in my early 20s when I had given up music for a few years because issues like work and relocation played their part. Fortunately, when I returned to my home city, those lost feelings came back and I knew I had to do something to get back into it. With social media expanding its footprint, I was able to connect with other like-minded folks and was able to resume playing with a band again. It’s the advice I would give to anyone who loves music, whether as a listener or performer, always stay connected with it. Our lives get more depth with music in it 🙂

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?

Vijay: We have a string of single releases culminating with an EP planned for this year, if we’re able to bounce back from the crisis that our country is facing right now with the pandemic.
