Norweigan alt-pop duo Ask Carol filled out a quick Q&A for us! Originally from the mountain community of Auma, this pair harnesses a powerful, grungy, sound that manages to be melancholic and high energy all at once, and is reminiscent of bands such as The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They’re planning to release an album in fall 2021.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?
We met right after high school, when studying music in southern Norway. That was such a long time before we actually started playing together, and there was so many other impressions and experiences that time. It’s hard to say when we actually met the first time, and to remember how it was. Anyway, after that year, we were friends and hung out for many years before we started the band.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?
There are so many cool venues and shows we have played, but one of them is definitely the awesome Strange Fruit in Seoul, South Korea. It’s a small blues club, with a great vibe and such a welcoming owner and staff. That is also where we had our first concert ever as a band.
WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?
Oh, there’s many! But one is The Kills, because we believe those who would go to a concert with The Kills are people with a good potential to like our music too. And The Kills is a great band, a duo like us 🙂
WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
It’s hard to pick just one song, it is often the most recent song we have worked on. It is feels fresh, maybe because we become a little tired of the other songs after working on them and playing them for a long time. While the last one feels new and most interesting. But it always changes.
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?
We did a road trip in Germany a couple of years ago, in connection with a festival we were attending in Hamburg. They had this great smoothie which we don’t have in Norway. I’ve forgotten the name of it… And probably some Danish pastry, an American hamburger, or German sausage, or maybe some taco/nacho style stuff, depending on what type of gas station. Thinking about it, we really miss the road-tripping/touring days of before Covid… One day, though, it will be back 🙂
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Our studio is located in the mountains, in the Norwegian woods. It’s a very short walk for some great scenery, and there are almost no people here. I think that influences our music, wether we like it or not. That’s probably where some of that melancholy and open, atmospheric sounds comes from.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Oh, that’s a tricky one. Probably, just do it. Whatever it is you want to do, just go for it. There’s no reason to wait. We were kind of late bloomers, we started this band after studying for several years, and talking about it. If there is something you wanna do, just go for it.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?
Currently we are focusing on writing, recording and producing our debut album. With the situation in the world, things have changed a lot, so now we are producing ourselves in our newly set up home studio in Auma, where we were quarantined after our Philippines Tour in February last year, and have stayed ever since.
And wow, it’s been over a year we have been stuck here, it is unbelievable! All our singles last year was recorded and produced by us here, as preparation for our album. It will be released this year, with a couple more singles leading up to the album the coming Fall. We’re also working on our video set up, to get it set up for some more live videos and stuff. Oh, and we’ve been working on our merch designs and artwork! The first few are available on our website, and a lot more is coming.
