Q&A with Attrition

Martin Bowes of Coventry, England-based band Attrition filled out a quick Q&A for us!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?

Well there have been rather a lot over the past 40 years…. Some I have lost… some have become my best friends…. Touring tends to do that… but it is always unforgettable whatever happens ☺

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?

Again so many wonderful experiences I would never have had without my music… those first tours in Europe and the USA… South America and the far east…. At some point I will gather everything for my book…

WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?

I don’t think of collaborating so much but I do always invite musicians I admire to contribute to albums and tours… I never know what that will bring and I love the fact it brings so much different input and creative ideas!

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?

Hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on moods… but gun against my head I would say “Fate is Smiling” (from 1985’s “Smiling at the Huponger Club” LP), “A Girl Called Harmony” (From 1991’s “A Tricky Business” LP), “Two Gods” (from 2004’s “Dante’s Kitchen” LP), and then bringing it up to date… the current single “The Alibi” from the upcoming album “The Black Maria.”) They are probably the best at capturing the moment… that time and place in my life…

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?

I don’t drive and most of everything inside a gas station is pretty terrible… ☺

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Art and film and personal experiences figure a lot as influences… from surrealism and dada art and films like David Lynch’s… and then the everyday that affects me all the time….

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Keep doing this thing… you get back equal to what you put in…. and the experience from a life in music is unsurpassable…

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?

I have just released the new single, “The Alibi” and directed and edited my first video for that… next I will finish the new album “The Black Maria” and am tentatively talking about post covid shows and tours… things are looking brighter after the lockdowns…
