John and Todd from 1980s hair metal influenced band Ghosts of Sunset filled out a quick Q&A for us! Ghosts of Sunset are planning to release a new single entitled “No Saints in the City” tomorrow on June 8th.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?
Todd: When I first met Todd Long, I was blown away at his passion for the 1980s “hair metal” that I loved so much. He knew everything I did about the genre and more! Once I heard him PLAY, it was obvious he was light years ahead of all our peers musically speaking. His talent continues to amaze me to this day.
John: When I first met John Merchant I didn’t really know much about him other than he was on the wrestling team. After I saw him at a High School “Lip Sync” competition I knew we would be instant friends! Here we are 20 some odd years later still kicking it together musically.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?
John: They’re all pretty memorable. I do remember a gig with the Goo Goo Dolls specifically because my wife was a big fan and pregnant with our son at the time. He’s 13 now and we always tell him that was his first concert!
Todd: I remember opening for the 90’s band Sponge and looking over and seeing Vinnie watching us. They were one of my favorites from that time period. We became friends shortly after that!
WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?
John: In our genre it would be someone like Jon Bon Jovi, Tom Keifer or Joe Elliot. Someone who has managed to grow while still keeping their initial fanbase. Out of genre? Singer-songwriters like Jason Isbell, Todd Snider, or Jesse Malin. SUPER DREAM? Bruce Springsteen.
Todd: Definitely Poison, Bon Jovi, Kiss, Def Leppard. Blink 182, New Found Glory So Many Greats!!!
WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
John: I love em all, but “Miles In Between” from our “Headed West” EP launched the band and made it a priority.
Todd: Currently I am loving “If You’re Not Coming Back”. This is slated to be our second single. The song just really moves me!
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?
John: There’s a gas station in Michigan called SPEEDWAY that has a “cheeseburger dog”. It’s exactly what it sounds like, a hotdog shaped burger with cheese in it! I mean come on!
Todd: There were these things called “Tornados” and I loved those things. Not sure if they are still around or not.
What are some of your non-musical influences?
John: My mom was always super supportive and a big fan. Jesus Christ lived a life that I strive for. Muhammad Ali stood by his beliefs without concern for public opinion or career.
Todd: My parents for sure! My mom was a drummer and taught me how to play. My dad helped people by being a fire fighter. We named my son after a basketball player (Jaxson Hayes) so obviously he’d be up there too.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
John: You’re ok and it’s all gonna be ok. It’s alright not to be liked you don’t always have to make everyone happy.
Todd: Shoulda stayed in college!!!
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?
John: Promoting our first two singles “No Saints in the City” and “If You’re Not Coming Back”, releasing the full-length album late summer/early fall and some limited live shows!
Todd: I agree with John! Promote, Promote, Promote!
