Q&A with Vanilla Sugar

Vanilla Sugar, an eclectic, high-energy synthpop-based solo artist, filled out a quick Q&A for us!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?

My favorite memory was my album release show on Jan 2020 in Houston, TX. I felt so much love in the room and the show was AWESOME. Everything was perfect from lights, sound, to how the whole night went. So many months were spent in the studio and a lot of blood, sweat, and glitter went into the album…it felt so good to be able to share it with everyone that night together.

WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?

I would absolutely love to do a collaboration with Grimes. We could definitely make some cool jams happen with our creepy and dark synth based styles. I feel like we would end up being friends as well!!

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?

It’s honestly very hard to pick one because each song is so special to me. If I had to choose, I would say ThisDarkPlace (the first single from my debut album, “She”). This song was the first time I have been open about the demons I’ve been battling in my head, and I feel like that’s a big step for me personally. I also just love this song so much. The music, the melodies in the synths and vocals- all of it. The music video is out on Youtube and Facebook now. It was a lot of fun to put together and watch come to life.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?

Having a go – to gas station order on the road is absolutely necessary!! I try to fill up specifically at truck stops (like Love’s) to have the freshest items. I usually grab a low sodium V8 for my fruits and veggies, a gluten free granola bar for carbs, and boiled eggs for protein!

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

I am heavily influenced by cinematic soundscapes. I love that “doomsday” feel… like War of the Worlds. I am very into epic sounding build ups and breakdowns.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

To not let people steer you away from what you believe in and what is true to you. Do not be afraid to try something new.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?

I am going to be heading back into the studio to start working on my second album, and will continue to shoot music videos for each song on “She.” I am also very excited to get back into tour rehearsals – I have dates planned for Germany and the UK next year, and am currently working on booking US dates as well.
