UK-based band Alterpodes filled out a quick Q&A for us!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?
Musically speaking I was surprised how quickly the sound seemed to come together, we just naturally had sympathetic styles. They just seemed like chill musicians who I could get along with! Reyson had Chelsea Boots on so he immediately went up in my estimation.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?
For me personally best would be a show at a club in Essen where most of the audience (a couple of hundred) knew our songs and really wanted to dance and have a good time. Was a great atmosphere and fun to play as we were responsible for getting the party started and we succeeded! Worst shows – possibly a very nearly empty pub and a workmate showed up in support and my string promptly broke mid-set so I had to restring too – that was fun!
WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?
It’d be amazing to work with Queen. They’re so musical plus they put on a brilliant live show! So after all that history I’d love to share a stage or collab with them.
WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
Out of the ones we have written as Alterpodes and have up at the moment I’d probably say Retro Psycho. It was the first time I’d taken inspiration from a TV show so it was a bit of an experiment in terms of songwriting specifically with respect to the lyrics. But I think I wasn’t overly literal so it’s still relatable. I hope I took one perspective and transposed it to a new medium.
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?
An English fry up where possible. Or some cheese and onion crisps maybe. Gas Station Sandwiches are best avoided in my view. My ideal gas station would have unbelievable tacos.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Friends with unusual perspectives, for better or worse, Technophiles, Mormons, Hippies, Mods, Anarchists, Socialists, Scientists, and above all other musicians (not necessarily in terms of their music but in terms of their mindset and attitudes). Well known writers, poets, actors and film-makers. To name a few: Shelley (Mary and Percy), Hemingway, Woolf, JRR Tolkein, Edward Hopper, Karl Popper, George Lucas, Philip K. Dick, James Dean, Steve McQueen. Past band mates, politicians and leaders (Boris, Trump, Bolsonaro et al – generally I find more the ones I dislike and disagree with) and probably most of all parents(!), their parents, their parents.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Play more guitar and less computer games! Get a guitar teacher who challenges you in the right ways and learn some theory and piano along the way.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?
Reach as many people as possible. Tour North and South America including Brazil and Puerto Rico. Play shows for friends we haven’t had a chance to see for ages. Have a number one album!
