Q&A with Shanghai Treason

Sam Christie, vocalist of the Yorkshire-based band Shanghai Treason, filled out a quick Q&A with us!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?

Good question, we actually came together to start a band rather than being in a situation where we all knew each other very well from the off, so we did a lot of getting to know each other whilst writing our first E.P. I remember one of my first impressions of everyone was wow these guys can all play really well and are very tight on music theory, I need to up my game haha

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?

My favourite gigs have been the ones we have done in Edinburgh, I’m Yorkshire man but I’m very in love with Scotland, love being there, love playing there , very much looking forward to returning to Scotland in January. We’d previously played Sneaky Pete’s & Banshee’s Labyrinth in Edinburgh but when we return next were hitting Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen.

WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?

I’d love to do a song with James Fearnley from The Pogues, hit accordion and vocals work on the Walker Roaders debut album was outstanding and was one of the best albums I’ve heard in years.

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?

I like a song of ours called ‘Can’t Even Hang A Man Right’ it’s a bit of a tory bashing anti Brexit anthem and the theme is essentially ‘they can’t get anything right these lot’, whit has only been reproven with the handling of COVID-19. Love playing that one live.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?

Haha I love this, I actually have a favourite service station for when we are on the road, it’s Scotch Corner in Richmond because we’re Greggs boys, Sausage Rolls and donuts all the way.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Haha I love this, I actually have a favourite service station for when we are on the road, it’s Scotch Corner in Richmond because we’re Greggs boys, Sausage Rolls and donuts all the way.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Flipping chill out a bit and stop taking yourself so seriously, I was so uber busy working trying to make a career in music that I often ran myself down very quick , to be fair to my younger self though it worked and I know work in music full time.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?

Our debut album will be released just before we tour with The Rumjacks, we’re working very hard behind the scenes on the release, very much looking forward to getting it out there!
