Dublin-based musical project Hometime filled out a Q&A for us!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?
I met them at different times but the one big thing they have in common is a real passion for what they do. Another great thing is that neither of them is a snob. They’re open to ideas and influences and new directions. They’re cool guys. Good friends, too.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?
The best show I ever played was in an arts festival many years ago. We were last on the bill and, for whatever reason, our more pop-oriented set was different to some of the more earnest acts before us. Even though we were complete unknowns, we were greeted by a wall of screams, as if we were some hugely famous act! People were dancing to our songs, which they’d never heard before. The atmosphere was just electric. It was one of those moments you could neither predict nor engineer.
WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?
I can’t honestly think of an artist I wouldn’t be completely overwhelmed by if I met them! The terror levels would keep me utterly silent.
WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
You’ll think that this is just a typical PR stunt but – honestly – my new single “It Beats Living Alone” is probably the one. It’s a song I’ve had for a long time. It’s autobiographical and documented the end of an important relationship. It’s about the cowardice and self-delusion it takes to stay in a failing relationship. No matter how often I sing it, I’m somehow right back in that situation.
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?
Red wine, salted peanuts and dark chocolate.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Other people, really. There’s nothing like a snippet of overheard conversation to fire up the imagination. What’s going on in that stranger’s life? It can even be a simple throwaway phrase. I’ve gained some great lyrics from that kind of source.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Everyone will tell you what they think will work for you, but they’re not always right. Go with your gut. Oh, and focus!
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?
To get my album finished. The pandemic played havoc with it but we’re back to a regular recording schedule now. It’s sounding great!
