Q&A with Flush

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR BANDMATES WHEN YOU MET?

This is Lasse (vocals, guitars in Flush) and these are my first impressions of my bandmates. Let me do this in chronological order.

I met Börje (drums) when we were kids, maybe 5 or 6 years old. I was playing in the backyard with another friend of mine, and Börje, who had just moved in, entered the backyard with huge energy and a radiant smile – dressed as a cowboy! I think he was slinging his guns and all ☺. We’ve been friends since and he is still this energetic and positive force that people find easy to connect with.

The first band that I joined in my teens already included many members of the future Flush line-up, and Janne (guitars) was one of them. He likes to express himself through his playing, especially through catchy and melodic solos, more than by talking, and is an important balancing and grounding force in the band.

Eero joined the band a few years ago and has quickly become an organizer of things. He could easily start his own travel or event agency, with a special focus on partying themed around metal music.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING SHOWS?

In general, my favorite moment is those seconds when entering the stage and hitting those first riffs or chords of the opening song. It’s usually always magical, but sometimes extra special magical. We played a small club (cave) in Slovakia and from that first moment we got the crowd going and it was all super fun. That moment when all the anticipation is released into energy… It gets me every time.

WHAT ARTIST WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?

Obviously, all musicians would want to work with Tom Waits, but that is not going to happen. I think, for a collaboration to make sense and be interesting, it would have to be someone from a different genre or scene. I can’t name names, but it would be fun to try out what we can do by combining our melancholic hard rock with rap and noisy black metal.

WHAT SONG ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?

Don’t make me choose a favorite of my own babies! Just kidding, I kind of like this question. My opinion keeps changing from one day to another, so ask again tomorrow and you’ll get a different answer. Today, the answer is the track ‘Chemicals and Conversation’ from our 2020 debut album ‘It Began as a Mistake’. It’s a very personal song with lots of thought put into the lyrics and the arrangement, and I am proud and happy we managed to record it successfully.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO GAS STATION ORDER?

I hope I have the right context for this question, as in Finland we don’t really do gas station orders. We pay at machines and don’t really shop anything else. That said, I think my order would be some sweet and/or salty snacks, a sixpack of beer for consumption at arrival, and some cool and funky sunglasses. I can see myself building up a collection of gas station sunglasses…

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

I don’t read as much today as I used to growing up, but I used to read a lot. I liked American classics like John Steinbeck and Charles Bukowski, and also got in a fair share of British realism through the likes of Thomas Hardy. More recently I have tried to get into poetry, through the likes of Leonard Cohen, Dylan Thomas, Allen Ginsberg, Charles Baudelaire and Mary Oliver, but my time has been constrained here. I am also a huge fan of the Swedish children’s book author Astrid Lindgren.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Good question! I would say that it is OK to be wrong, to make mistakes and to show vulnerability. As a child I was bullied for these things and it has left some scars and behavioral traits, that I am only slowly growing out of. But I also know that adhering to advice, however sound it may be, is hard if the people around you are behaving in opposing ways. We are all products of our surroundings and it’s hard to tell a kid to “just be yourself” if the other kids are bullying them for doing that.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE YEAR?

We are releasing a new EP shortly, on November 5th to be precise. Our goal is to make as many people as possible hear our music and be given a chance to find something of value in it. The EP is called ‘Conspiracies, Threats and Chaos’, and it’ll be on digital platforms. We’re also investing in music videos so do check those out too.
