Interview with Brett Pruneau

We emailed up-and-coming artist Brett Pruneau over email! You can stream Brett’s new single, “Amazing Grace,” here.

What artist would be your dream collaboration?

Sara Bareilles has been my biggest inspiration over the last 15 years of my life. I admire her honesty about struggles with anxiety and not feeling good enough. I admire her otherworldly musicianship and execution of story telling… she is just an absolute walking muse to me. I’ve been lucky enough to float around some of the same circles of friends as she does and every time I’ve been around her she is just the most down to earth and real person. I’d love to collaborate with her in some form or fashion in the future. For me, Sara B is where it’s at.

What song are you most proud of and why?

I recently released a track called ‘Sitting on Top of the World’ – and it was one of the most vocally demanding songs I’ve worked on in a while. So much so, that I almost scrapped it… (ha ha). I’m really proud of figuring out how to make that song work for me. I think the result is a very infectious, feel-good vibe.

What is your star sign, and do you feel like it represents your artistic style? Why or why not?

Well, I’m an Aries… I find myself never really relating to the ‘fiery aries’ much in my personal life… I tend to be on the gentler side, and actually a lot more introverted than some might expect. HOWEVER, when it comes to music-making… i definitely see a more assertive side of myself come out. You can ask any of the producers I’ve been working with lately…. I always have some pretty specific direction in mind on how I want things to sound in the studio. I’m sure they want to strangle me sometimes!

What is your go-to gas station order?

A Gatorade Zero (Glacier Cherry, obviously) and a bag of Combos.

What are some of your non-musical influences, like books or movies?

As far as movies go… I LOVE a good drama. Anything with Meryl. I need to read more than I do, but lately I’ve been loving the ‘Bad Ass’ Collection by Jen Sincero. I think she offers such great information in a very palatable way. It doesn’t feel preachy but you put the book down feeling empowered. She’s definitely doing what she’s meant to be doing in life.

What’s a lyric from one of your songs that is especially meaningful to you? Tell us a bit about it!

My latest track called ‘My Amazing Grace’ was written by this amazing artist named Kelly Sweet. It’s a very ethereal song that talks about being scared to fall in love and it references that fear as a lion. One line in the song says: “My dear, the lion whispers still. He pulls me in against my will but in the night I feel you here – a light up in the atmosphere.” I really relate to that line. Giving yourself to someone is very scary, especially after you’ve been hurt and for some reason we, as humans, love to self sabotage when we are finding ourselves landing in a good thing romantically. I’m learning to surrender – to feel the fear and do it anyways.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Take some dance classes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are your goals for the year, and what can we expect to see from you in the future?

2022 is going to be a good year for me, I’m not giving it any other option!!! I’m currently building a new solo show to start traveling with starting in the summer and continuing to produce new music. I have a collection of original songs that my friend and colleague Effie Passero has written for me – It’s a very personal project that I’m planning to start diving into this year as well. It’s some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. I feel so lucky to be able to interpret what she has written.
